paper doll
Much of my work is autobiographical. This performance began with the uncertainty of who I was as a person and artist, after returning from France (where I danced with Ballet Preljocaj). paper doll was a solo performance dealing with the fears I harbored about my transition back and the journey in reclaiming my identity. I constructed a dress out of paper and duct tape and wrote and drew images on the dress of gender and political affiliations.
Paperdoll is a solo about disruption. Upon my return to the United States from dancing with Ballet Preljocaj. I had been immersed in a small French village for three years and had entered back into “The Big Apple”. I was unable to define myself. At times I was contending with the persona others had given me and was paranoid that I would make a faux pas. What did it mean to be a woman? What did it mean to be Black? Furthermore, what did it mean when these characteristics depicted 'the margins'?
